Wondering how to click high-quality product pictures without creating a hole in your pocket? Say hello to light boxes. While they are available online, they can be rather expensive especially if you’re looking for the right size or a good quality one. With this easy and extremely affordable DIY method, you can create your own light box, or photo box, to achieve a professional-quality catalogue of your products.

Things you will need

1. An empty carton (eg: a microwave box)

2. A sharp paper cutter/knife

3. Tracing paper sheets

4. Cello tape

5. White chart paper + coloured chart paper

6. 2 table lamps

Step 1:

Choose a carton box. The larger the box, the more objects you’ll be able to place inside and shoot at a time. Make sure the box is in a sturdy condition and isn’t damaged or bends easily.

Step 2:

Leaving about 2-3 inches from the edges, measure and cut out big squares or rectangles on either side of your box. These will serve as the windows for your light box.

Step 3:

Using the tracing paper, cover and tape your windows tightly. These will ensure the perfect kind of soft-light for your product shoot.

Step 4:

Add your backdrop in. Whether you want to shoot on a white backdrop or a coloured backdrop, it’s up to you to add the colour or gradient chart paper of your choice. A good start is to use a plain white chart paper.

Step 5:

Place a table lamp on either side of your carton windows. This acts as a source of light on your products.

Step 6:

That’s it! Pull out your finest camera (that smartphone in your pocket) and getting shooting. Adjust the distance of the lamps, the other light in the room and choose from different results.
